My First Post -journey so far !!

I am here to get active and get going  with something i have realized i like a lot and that is Photography  .. I am not a pro when it comes to photography.. its just that i love it !!.

It all started.. when in 2006 i went to Australia for some official training  and somehow missed carrying a camera along!!Looking back, I think , i'd have deliberately left it as it was a film camera .. (point and shoot ) and digital cameras had in fact arrived big time  by then with Mega pixel war at its peak .. and also as i did not know how to put the roll correctly, i would have felt embarrassed carrying that along . So" missed it" is incorrect ... bottom line is I did not have a Camera !! . So we went to Melbourne..All colleagues to attend the training there.. with all the ppl from all over Asia Pacific getting trained in the daytime and enjoying the evenings in what i would say a very thriving city .Beautiful streets , amazing MCG , beautiful girls , old charm to an ultra modern city . We had a gala time to say the least!! Sendoff party at the end of the training  meant everyone letting loose ,dancing , laughing , networking , having wine and Beer( the officially allowed baverages  in such events ) and yes CLICKING PICTURES.
We had to go to Gold coast for another three days , a smaller group this time and more of a pleasure trip . Amazing place .. Beautiful beaches.. Golden Sand , Blue sky , tall buildings .. PICTURESQUE surroundings .. but no camera. !! .  So , i decided to buy those use and throw ones to take at least some memories back with me to India .. Had 26 exposures on that !!!.

View of Gold coast beach using my " use and throw" fujifilm plastic camera . Scanned on my Epson V300 Scanner .

Thoroughly enjoyed my trip otherwise but this feeling of  not having a camera was killing me .. At Brisbane Airport like every Indian who is traveling out of India  , i went crazily looking for amazing "DUTY FREE " stuff , some good scotch . some exotic chocolates and yes .. there were electronics too .
That is where i set my eyes on Sony Alpha 100 W , Sony's first Digital SLR launched the same year retailing at 75,000 INR  back home  . available at  approximately 1300 AUD  that meant i was getting the same with two kit lenses at a price which would be a steal . Out came the Credit Card   (  did not have enough cash in all the bank accounts combined..),, and here I was entering the plane with a Brand New DSLR , with 10MP resolution  and two kit lenses which read some numbers that did not ring any bell whatsoever ,nor I cared what they were. I was happy as one of the Lenses read  Telephoto Zoom . and it anyway had the manuals which i thought i would read in the comfort of my home . Imagining that i am clicking away the pics of my family and what not , like a child  me the  26 year old kid   slept off  as the Quantas Airlines plane  cruised towards Singapore.

5 hour stop over at Singapore !!! "Wow " I said to myself , thinking about a corner in that swanky Changi  Airport where i will open each and very small box in the big box carrying my camera and understand what all i have been able to get. I had good couple of hours for checking the stuff and i was smiling ear to ear .. i quickly set my luggage for minimum discomfort at security check ins and with my camera around my neck !! Yes!!! i had packed the Box in my bag  and in my excitement had opened the camera so as to click few pictures of Airport as well . To my surprise there was no medium mentioned where i could store any photographs .. yes no media card . That meant no photos that day!! "Oh Common,"I told my friend , who was busy buying more liquour at Singapore , "How can they not give a memory card ? " Looking at the bottle of blue label as if he is gonna buy 20 of them he said, "these things you have to buy seperately and they aren't cheap .. " looking at the sales guy he asked the price of the blue label. "This duty free is Bad " he declared calculating the price of the bottle to be around 16000 INR and looked at my camera.. " you have a got a good deal my friend  !!! Ab to tu photographer banega !!..aa chal cigarette peete hain !!! "(Now you'll surely become a Photogrpaher , common now lets have a Fag " )

My excitement knew absolutely no bounds as i told the cabbie at Delhi Airport to zip me through the traffic ..

I was going home and a very long late night date with my brand new Camera was about to get started!!!.

Super - Takumar 500mm F4.5 Manual Lens- Is it any good !

With my impulsive buying getting better of me , i recently won on ebay  a super- takumar 500mm f4..5 manual beast of a lens. Initially i was cursing myself to the core , why on earth did i even  bid on the same? Post winning i browsed through eBay and found the price points of the same lens in other bids was significantly higher ( at least some respite ) . I paid for the same and waited for lens to arrive. All of my search on the lens and on images clicked using that did not help me much. I got more pictures on web of the lens itself instead of pictures clicked using it . Whatever limited pictures i could search raised my hopes  , and lens looked nothing but a stellar performer. Most of the reviews spoke about few negatives - 1. Heavy 2. Chromatic aberration. 3. Impractical for active wildlife. 4. MFD being 10 mts  Well , so the lens arrived.. It had no dedicated lens case and was packed in a bubble wrap. I had to pay customs duty which made the lens almost ar...

Smooth Trans Focus (STF) Mode - A test shot using Minolta Dynax 7 .

STF Mode test shot using Dynax 7 . , a photo by arnavkhorana on Flickr. Minolta Dynax/Maxxum  7 's unique feature of  Smooth trans focus (STF) effect certainly gives amazing bokeh and a "POP UP " effect . 7 shots at varying apertures are taken on single frame.. so tripod is must and object should be stationary . Use a tripod , keep the object stationary .. in case you are working with a model you might need to ensure that he/she does not  even bat an eyelid. As the 7 shots can take considerable amount of time ( in a second or so ) humans may sway a little  resulting in motion blur . This latency limits the use of this feature a little but having said that the effect is truly worth trying !!! and  .. if the background is at certain distance .. the "3D or Pop up " effect is more profound .  I haven't used the Sony 135mm STF Lens , so cant compare the effect of dynax/maxxum 7 and the one produced by th specialized lens. Nevertheless the feature is ve...
