Sony Alpha AF reflex 500 mm lens aka SAL500F80 - Arrived !!!!

On 9th of september 2011  late night as i browsed through eBay for my much desired Sony alpha mirror lens , i came across this item for sale . I did not bid for the  lens .. i outrightly  purchased it. I was third time lucky as my two previous bidding attempts were in vain and i lost on auction. This time i did not want to take any  chance. I was somewhat desperate for the range for bird photogrpahy and i must confess i do have LBO or as they call Lens buying obsession .

Paying that very day for the lens , now countdown had begun. I checked my email on my blackberry almost every half an hour for the tracking no . and once i got it ..USPS site wouldnt have got that many hits collectively from any country that they got from me.. Man was i desperate !!!.for first three four days.. there was hardly any update on USPS about the shipment .. then things started moving .. On 17th of September , lens was on its way to India. my joy knew no bounds but I was somewhat apprehensive about these shipments .Will I get the lens in perfect condition.. Will custom at india delay the same . As I searched on intrnet on the flow of shipments from US to India , horror stories is what i found on the web. No one recommended USPS shipments . I felt like  kicking myself.. for few extra dollars i shoyuld have got the same fedexed , i thought.
So i waited with bated breadth for my lens to arrive.. things moved fast when USPS site got updated on 23rd that material has arrived in india. It was sent to customs.. and in three days.. it was on its way with custom duty of 27. 1 % levied . on 3rd ..i caught hold of the postman of our area and asked him if they have recd any parcels for me.. He replied in affirmative but said "I'll bring it tomorrow as i had no space to carry it . I requested him like a kid if the same can be handpicked from post office. I asked him to park the cycle in our compund and off we went to postoffice in my car to get my much awaitd Sony 500 mm mirror lens   .
I fell in love with the lens , the moment i opened very neatly packed original Sony orange colored box . The seller had meticulously kept everything in order. I was so happy that the cost of oputright purchase + hefty duty even could not somber my mood. Here are two test shots from the same .

Wow What a lens . !!! If you don have money to buy those very expensive super telephot lenses with fast apertures.. this lens at least helps you get the range at fraction of the cost .  Will write the review over the weekend as i plan to go to bird sanctury coming saturday !!!.. Wilderness calling .. and I think I am READY!!!

Super - Takumar 500mm F4.5 Manual Lens- Is it any good !

With my impulsive buying getting better of me , i recently won on ebay  a super- takumar 500mm f4..5 manual beast of a lens. Initially i was cursing myself to the core , why on earth did i even  bid on the same? Post winning i browsed through eBay and found the price points of the same lens in other bids was significantly higher ( at least some respite ) . I paid for the same and waited for lens to arrive. All of my search on the lens and on images clicked using that did not help me much. I got more pictures on web of the lens itself instead of pictures clicked using it . Whatever limited pictures i could search raised my hopes  , and lens looked nothing but a stellar performer. Most of the reviews spoke about few negatives - 1. Heavy 2. Chromatic aberration. 3. Impractical for active wildlife. 4. MFD being 10 mts  Well , so the lens arrived.. It had no dedicated lens case and was packed in a bubble wrap. I had to pay customs duty which made the lens almost ar...

Smooth Trans Focus (STF) Mode - A test shot using Minolta Dynax 7 .

STF Mode test shot using Dynax 7 . , a photo by arnavkhorana on Flickr. Minolta Dynax/Maxxum  7 's unique feature of  Smooth trans focus (STF) effect certainly gives amazing bokeh and a "POP UP " effect . 7 shots at varying apertures are taken on single frame.. so tripod is must and object should be stationary . Use a tripod , keep the object stationary .. in case you are working with a model you might need to ensure that he/she does not  even bat an eyelid. As the 7 shots can take considerable amount of time ( in a second or so ) humans may sway a little  resulting in motion blur . This latency limits the use of this feature a little but having said that the effect is truly worth trying !!! and  .. if the background is at certain distance .. the "3D or Pop up " effect is more profound .  I haven't used the Sony 135mm STF Lens , so cant compare the effect of dynax/maxxum 7 and the one produced by th specialized lens. Nevertheless the feature is ve...
